Red Velvet: Stir It Up Mama

There are a lot of random wrestlers that I have written about. And since I have written about the Men's ROH World Television Champion, I think it's time to talk about the Women's ROH World Television Champion and that is Red Velvet. Red Velvet has an interesting career in both AEW and Ring Of Honor respectively. She comes from a family line of world class boxers as her father is Prudencio Cardona and is the niece of Ricardo Cardona

Red Velvet is a case of wrestler that needed a lot of time to show the world of what she can do, and she is one of the most consistent and reliable wrestlers that you would want in any company right now whether that being on TV or PPV. Much like the blog on Nick Wayne, we will be going through her two reigns as ROH Women's World Television Champion and feature key matches she had outside of it.

A Rough Return
It seemed like Red Velvet was going to be in a bigger role on AEW TV in 2022 and early 2023 until she was absent on AEW TV for a reason that I can't remember. I remember the injury she suffered in 2022, but I don't remember why she wasn't on AEW TV for 9 months. On the Nov 8, 2023 edition of AEW Dynamite, Red Velvet made her return to TV in a losing effort to eventual TBS Champion Julia Hart.

Credit: AEW

After defeating Ruby Soho on AEW Rampage, Red Velvet lost an AEW TBS Title Eliminator match to Skye Blue. Her last bout of 2023 was a losing effort to Anna Jay. Definitely a rough start to the year for Red Velvet, but 2024 would gear up to be an interesting year for the woman that is straight out of yo mama's kitchen.

2024 would also be okay start as she would make her debut on Ring Of Honor TV. It was on Episode 45 of ROH On HonorClub as she defeated Alex Garcia in a 3 minute match. On the Jan 13 Episode of AEW Collision, Deonna Purrazzo would dispatch of Velvet. On Episode 48 of ROH On HonorClub, Red Velvet would get a win against Heather Reckless, who is now in TNA as Heather By Elegance.

Credit: AEW

After losing to Thunder Rosa on Rampage, Velvet would go on a 3 match winning streak. She won a four way match at Boca Raton Championship Wrestling, outlasting 3 other women in a Four Corner Survival match on Episode 49 of ROH On HonorClub and won against Vertvixen on the Feb 3 edition of Collision. That momentum would come to a complete halt as she lost to "Timeless" Toni Storm in an AEW Women's World Championship Eliminator bout.

This next section may be the most important because we wouldn't get the Red Velvet we know now if it wasn't for this arc. And that is...

Hunt For A Prize Possession
Late last year, Ring Of Honor announced that the women's division would get a second title that being the ROH Women's World Television Championship. It's the women's variant of the ROH World Television Championship and the first new title introduced in ROH under the Tony Khan Era. This title would be crowned in a tournament and not the piece of crap of that ROH Women's Pure Championship Tournament we would get a year later.

Credit: Ring Of Honor

This tournament would have 16 wrestlers with it being a consist feature on Ring Of Honor TV until that year's Supercard Of Honor. Red Velvet's first round opponent was Sandra Moore and it became, in my opinion, the best first round match of the entire tournament. The Quarterfinals would see "Legit" Leyla Hirsch take on Red Velvet, which would be foreshadowing a future contest. Red Velvet would be victorious and punch her ticket to the Semi Finals.

Credit: Ring Of Honor

The Semi Finals would be one of her toughest bouts as she took on one of AEW's hardest hitters Queen Aminata. This match really added to the tournament as there was a lot of intensity and aggression in these sequences. It ended with Queen Aminata coming out on top and Velvet's tournament campaign came to a close. The Inaugural ROH Women's World Television Champion would end up being Billie Starkz, who took advantage of Aminata's caring nature to get the submission victory.

Credit: AEW

The first match post tournament would be back on AEW TV as she challenged Athena for the ROH Women's World Title at AEW Battle Of The Belts X. Athena would retain the ROH Women's World Title and now, Red Velvet would be involved in the feud between Athena and Queen Aminata as Aminata made the save after the bout. After gaining victories on ROH TV, Red Velvet would challenge Athena's minion Billie Starkz for the ROH Women's World Television Championship at that year's ROH Death Before Dishonor event.

Credit: Ring Of Honor

Red Velvet defeated Billie Starkz in 14 minutes 55 seconds to capture the ROH Women's World Television Championship. This decision is more scrutinized than praise. It's not because of Red Velvet winning the belt, it's more on how the title was treated when Billie Starkz held it. A TV title should be a simple title to book like when NJPW used the NJPW World TV Title, AEW with their TNT & Continental Titles and WWE with their Intercontinental & United States titles... well... more on the men's side. It should be a fixture of HonorClub with consistent title defenses and multiple proving ground bouts.

However, Billie would only have 4 Proving Ground matches against Dream Girl Ellie, Zamaya, Sandra Moore & Angelica Risk, but no official TV title defenses. Keep in mind, Starkz held the title for 112 days and only defended it once which was when she lost to Velvet. So with the title already being at a poor start, Velvet's reign starts at a very rocky position.

So we have covered the chase, now we have to cover the rest. It took a lot longer to do this than in the Nick Wayne version. It's mainly because the ROH Women's World Television Championship wasn't established yet. Let's continue to see how this goes.

Trial And Change
Remember when I mentioned the treatment about the ROH Women's World TV Title when Billie Starkz held it, yeah, the same issues bled into Velvet's 1st reign. On Episode 85 of ROH On HonorClub, Red Velvet would defend the ROH Women's World Television Championship against Diamante, which is the first defense of the title on ROH TV. Which means it took 6 months of title's existence for there to be defense on weekly TV. Lord have mercy.

The match would turn dire as Red Velvet retained the title via disqualification. Diamante would keep attacking Red Velvet after the bell and it meant that they will have another match. This match was actually so much fun. I was surprised by the time as it was 10 minutes on the dot, but I'm cool with it. I have many gripes about this title not having any defenses, but this is better than nothing so far. Also, I forgot to mention this. Red Velvet's title is more of a custom design tailor made for her. The ROH Women's World Television Title design is basically a copy paste design of the ROH Men's World Television Title. The difference is that Velvet's design had a slight change with the strap being Red as oppose to the belt's design which is a black strap. It's a nice change actually.

For the next 5 episodes, Red Velvet would not be on ROH TV as she would be representing Ring Of Honor in Mexico. She was invited by the oldest wrestling promotion in the world, Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre or known by non-Mexican fans as CMLL. This promotion would have their annual CMLL Grand Prix Internacional de Amazonas. It is a tournament inspired by New Japan Pro-Wrestling's International Wrestling Grand Prix tournament in the 1980s. The system changed since 2002 and the women's version has been going on since 2022.

Credit: CMLL (Screenshot)

I am trying to not go too in depth on, because we would be here all day, so I am just gonna say it's Torneo Cibernetico style tourney with 2 teams of 10 wrestlers. It was Team Mexico vs Team International. Red Velvet represented Ring Of Honor and the country of Columbia as part of Team International with Alex Windsor (England), AEW's Willow Nightingale (USA), La Catalina (Chile), CMLL's Persephone (USA), Samatha Black (Costa Rica), TNA's Tessa Blanchard (USA), Unagi Sayaka (Japan), Sumika Yanagawa (Japan) and Vietnam's Viva Van. Velvet actually made it to the Final 2, but eventually lost to the tournament winner, Reyna Isis.

Credit: Ring Of Honor

Back in United States, Red Velvet would end her feud with Diamante. On Episode 90 of ROH On HonoeClub, they fought in a street fight for the ROH Women's World Television Championship. This match was really fun and if you want carnage on wrestling TV, then you have it. I couldn't enjoy this at the time because of how this came about. I wouldn't have minded that DQ finish from the first time if the title was defended constantly. However, it wasn't done like that so it left a bitter taste.

As 2025 was nearing, NJPW, AEW, ROH, STARDOM & CMLL announced in June that they will have co-promoted event in Japan on January 5th called Wrestle Dynasty. For the women's side, there was multi--promotional tournament called the International Women's Cup. The promotions for this were STARDOM, AEW, ROH & CMLL since NJPW is a men's only promotion. Who would represent each side was a question. STARDOM did a 2 night single elimination; AEW did a four woman mini tournament and CMLL did four way elimination bout. Ring Of Honor... did a four way bout with ROH's best. It was ROH Women's World Champion Athena, ROH Women's World Television Champion Red Velvet, "Legit" Leyla Hirsch and Billie Starkz. Athena won the bout.

The next section will focus on a evolution of Red Velvet's character. And it all starts at one place.

Your Turn In The Kitchen
At Ring Of Honor's last pay per view of the year Final Battle, Red Velvet would defend the ROH Women's World Television Championship against "Legit" Leyla Hirsch. They have been building to this for a while on programming. In the bout, Velvet would use the turnbuckle to retain the title, turning heel (bad guy) in the process.

Credit: Ring Of Honor

This was a monumental career mode for Red Velvet. After this, she had become more confident, more scummy and more unorthodox. Was this needed for the time? Honestly... not really. Maybe because watching this show have made me developed numbness, but this really wasn't needed. Especially since Athena won in the main event against Billie Starkz. Anyway, Red Velvet would enter 2025 as ROH Women's World Television Champion.

Credit: Ring Of Honor

The first title defense Red Velvet had after turning heel was against STARDOM wrestler HANAKO on the first ROH TV episode of 2025 (Episode 97). HANAKO was in the United States for ROH Final Battle and she did beat Harley Cameron on Zero Hour. The match itself was unique to the rest as Red Velvet as we did have heel smaller facing the babyface giant in HANAKO. Velvet used every dirty tactic in the book and pinned HANAKO with that Front Flip Reverse DDT she established in CMLL.

Credit: Ring Of Honor

Much like a lot of great heel wrestlers, this didn't click me almost immediately. At least it grew on me as time went on, but this was kind of annoying at first. The next defense of Velvet would be on ROH TV #101, taking on Leila Grey of Top Flight. This was the main event of the show and it was a fun match with Red Velvet retaining. The best defense of Velvet's 1st reign in my opinion was on Episode 102 against Robyn Renegade in Daily's Place. It makes me wonder why don't most wrestling companies do villain vs villain bouts. It has proven to work if you have a good build and characters.

Credit: Ring Of Honor X CMLL

Her final defense for a while was against La Catalina. That was her second best defense of Velvet's 1st reign as well. After two Proving Ground bouts, Red Velvet seemed to just vanish in May of that year. From what I knew, she wasn't injured. There was no mention of her. Like where was she? Luckily she would be back in time for AEW and Ring Of Honor's Tour in Mexico with CMLL. Her first match was on the CMLL vs AEW & ROH show where she lost to Persephone. On the CMLL Fantasica Mania show, Red Velvet beat Kira. And on the ROH x CMLL Global Wars show, Thunder Rosa and Persephone beat both champions Athena and Red Velvet with Persephone pinning Velvet again.

So the next section will feature Red Velvet a little bit, but I will focus on other people. It's mainly because it ties into the following entry and you'd be confused if I didn't explain the next one.

Interim For The Fallen (Part 1)
During AEW All In Texas week, Ring Of Honor would have their Supercard Of Honor event. It did seem that we would get Red Velvet vs Persephone, but it didn't end up happening. Before the event, Tony Khan announced during the Media Scrum that Red Velvet suffered an injury and an Interim champion will be crowned in her place. How would do that? Simple. Let's take some of the world's best and put them in a four way clusterfuck.

Credit: Ring Of Honor.

The bout featured TJPW's Miyu Yamashita, Mina Shirakawa, Yuka Sakazaki and CMLL's Persephone. I might be crazy to say this, but this is the best match of the title's history so far. It was nonstop action that the AEW fans in the audience loved. Especially with the incredible performances by Yuka Sakazaki and Miyu Yamashita. Mina Shirakawa winning was really lame since it was the safe choice, but I don't mind her being champion. Like Miyu Yamashita or Yuka Sakazaki was right there.

Credit: Ring Of Honor

After the fight, Red Velvet and Mina Shirakawa went face to face. This means that we will be following Mina Shirakawa for the time being. So that means AEW images will be back in the picture. And since it was the build to Blood & Guts, it is going to be an interesting time.

Interim For The Fallen (Part 2)
The following day, Mina Shirakawa would be involved in the Casino Gauntlet match at AEW All In Texas. This Casino Gauntlet would be known for many returns which includes the AEW Debut of STARDOM's Syuri. I love Syuri so much that I am including her here even if it's short. Mina Shirakawa would be in the match alongside ROH Women's World Champion Athena.

Credit: AEW

Athena would actually win in home state of Texas by hitting one of the most aggressive O-Face I've seen on Mina to get the win. This would be a sad one because afterwards... Mina got injured. I swear to god. She just became Interim Champion. Okay, this one wasn't going to be long since it was a hand injury as supposed to Red Velvet's one, so she will be out for only a month.

Credit: Ring Of Honor

Mina Shirakawa returned with a taste to get her revenge on Athena as she faced her in the main event of ROH Death Before Dishonor for the ROH Women's World Championship. This bout was really good even though the build was fine, but bullshit because they had loads of time to build up challengers, but they didn't even do that. Athena would retain the ROH Women's World Championship against Mina.

Credit: AEW

Mina Shirakawa would return to AEW TV on Collision as she teamed with AEW Women's World Champion "Timeless" Toni Storm and Queen Aminata to take on Billie Starkz and Sisters Of Sin (Julia Hart & Skye Blue) of the Triangle Of Madness. Toni, Mina and Aminata got the win. The following week on Collision, Mina Shirakawa team with Toni Storm, Kris Statlander and Harley Cameron in a winning effort against the Triangle Of Madness (Thekla, Julia Hart & Skye Blue) and Megan Bayne.

Credit: AEW

On the Tailgate Brawl To All Out, Mina would team up with Willow Nightingale, Queen Aminata and Harley Cameron in a brawl to beat MegaBad (Megan Bayne & Penelope Ford) and Sisters Of Sin (Julia Hart & Skye Blue). On the AEW Dynamite Post All Out, our Interim ROH Women's World Television Champion would challenge Kris Statlander for the AEW Women's World Championship. I didn't watch the bout so I can't tell you how it was. All I know is that this was Kris Statlander's first defense and she predictably retained the AEW Women's World Championship.

Credit: Ring Of Honor

Mina Shirakawa would have her first TV appearance on ROH since Death Before Dishonor was on Episode 134. She defended the Interim ROH Women's World Television Championship against newly signed wrestler at the time, Lacey Lane. This was her first defense since winning the title. The match was fun and that is the only thing I could say. Mina Shirakawa would win after hitting the Glamorous Driver MINA on Lane.

Interim For The Fallen (Part 3)
AEW WrestleDream would be turning point for the ROH Women's World Television Championship. And it all starts with... Mercedes Mone. What?? Exactly. This was when Mercedes Mone was doing her Belt Collector stuff and at WrestleDream, she did an open challenge. Alongside that, her AEW TBS Championship was also on the line with the challenging wrestler's title. Mina Shirakawa answered the challenge and in turn, putting her Interim ROH Women's World Television Championship on the line.

Credit: AEW

I didn't watch this match as well, but I did see The Frat House (Cole Karter, Griff Garrison & Jacked Jameson) holding Mone's belts, which is kind of funny. Mercedes Mone did beat Mina Shirakawa to become the new Interim ROH Women's World Television Champion. This was treated as a massive deal since (and correct me if I'm wrong) Mone beat Ultimo Dragon's record. What gets overlooked is that it's the first time that an AEW or Ring Of Honor Interim belt have changed hands, which should be pointed out as well. Maybe it did, but I don't know. This means that we have to now follow Mercedes Mone at this point.

Interim For The Fallen (Part 4)
Mercedes Mone's first activity since winning the Interim ROH Women's World Television title was... winning another title. Haha. I love her so much. She went for to Winnipeg Pro Wrestling to face TNA's Jody Threat for the WPW Women's Championship. She beat Jody Threat to become the new WPW Women's Champion. Back on AEW TV, she defended the CMLL World Women's Championship against CMLL's Olympia. She retained the title against her.

Credit: AEW

Mercedes Mone would try to make history by teaming with ROH Women's World Champion Athena in the inaugural AEW Women's World Tag Team Championship tournament. That didn't end up becoming successful as they lost in the first round to eventual tournament winners, Babes Of Wrath (Willow Nightingale & Harley Cameron). Mone would take a trip to Italy to defend her Bestya Women's Championship against Queen Maya. She retained the title. Mone would be in one of the toughest bouts as she was part of Blood & Guts.

Credit: AEW

She teamed with the Triangle Of Madness (Thekla, Julia Hart & Skye Blue), Megan Bayne and Marina Shafir against AEW Women's World Champion Kris Statlander, Jamie Hayter, Babes Of Wrath (Willow Nightingale & Harley Cameron) and Timeless Love Bombs ("Timeless" Toni Storm & Mina Shirakawa). Her team won, but wasn't able to celebrate since she got laid out by Kris Statlander. In New York City for House Of Glory, she challenged Nor Phoenix Diana for the APAC Women's Championship, a title from Malaysia. She obviously won and became the APAC Women's Champion.

Credit: AEW

Now it's time we conclude the Interim arc. I think ending this here is a good way to go. The reason is that we have to now focus on someone who made her return to address the fact she is the real ROH Women's World Television Champion.

A Surprise Banter Into The Mix
Red Velvet would make her return from injury on ROH TV. She addressed Mercedes Mone and the unification between the two were in the works. Mone was in a feud with AEW Women's World Champion Kris Statlander at the time. So on the AEW Dynamite + Collision 3 hour special before Full Gear, Red Velvet and Mercedes Mone faced off in the main event for the ROH Women's World Television Championship in a unification match.

Credit: AEW

It was her first match back on AEW TV since her heel turn. Velvet really did well against Mercedes Mone. Was it her best match? Hell no. But this was really fun. Mone defeated Red Velvet to officially become the 3rd ROH Women's World Television Champion. Mercedes Mone would lose to Kris Statlander for the AEW Women's World Championship at AEW Full Gear. Mercedes Mone would also be on ROH TV in a 34 second bout against Lovely Miss Larkan.

Credit: Ring Of Honor

ROH Final Battle would be another big deal as Mercedes Mone would make her first defense of the ROH Women's World Television Championship in a rematch against Red Velvet. The match had a lot of grandeur and it featured the first ever in-ring introductions for the title. It's crazy given it's the third match on the card. This match got a lot of praise, but I thought it was good TV match. Maybe it's because I was watched this after that fantastic Iron Man bout between Lee Moriarty and Nigel McGuinness.

Credit: Ring Of Honor

Red Velvet would surprise Mercedes Mone with a rollup to not only become the new ROH Women's World Television Champion, but also become a 2-Time ROH Women's World Television Champion. So now we start the second reign of Red Velvet as ROH Women's World Television Champion. Which means that we have one more section to get through.

Splatter In The Pot
Everything about Red Velvet's first reign that was bad is done better here in the best way possible. The first match of Velvet was on Episode 146 of ROH TV after Final Battle. She faced Lacey Lane in the Proving Ground. She would be successful in beating Lane. The next 4 bouts following that would all be Proving Ground matches against Session Moth Martina (ROH Global Wars UK), Janai Kai (ROH YouTube Special #4), Robyn Renegade (Ep 150) and Vertvixen (ROH X MPX Global Wars).

Credit: Ring Of Honor & Metroplex Wrestling

I know you might be thinking. Didn't I mention this in a bad light? Yes. But that was because there wasn't any official title defenses in Billie Starkz reign. That would be rectified in the match she had on Episode 156. She would defend the ROH Women's World Television Championship against the newcomer to AEW and Ring Of Honor, SkyFlight's Zayda Steel. This was a really fun TV title defense for Red Velvet and the next step in Zayda Steel's development in AEW and ROH TV.

Credit: Ring Of Honor

The next three title defenses was against Hyan (Ep 158), Trish Adora (Ep 160) and JCW's Alice Crowley (ROH X MLP Global Wars). This current run is way better than the first. Much like Jon Moxley's excellent AEW Continental Championship run so far, it seems like Red Velvet was done correctly in a sense that the Proving Grounds and Title Defenses are done well. They use the Proving Ground matches for wrestler who mostly don't get wins or are new people and the title defenses are mostly for people who have momentum or a higher pecking order. I think that skill set is used for this.

Post: Wow. Now that was a long trip to talk about Red Velvet. This took way longer than I needed to do this. I thought that Nick Wayne's one was long, but this shit was a doozy. I do recommend not reading all of this since it is long as fuck and I would understand if you want to read certain sections. I hope you all had a great and I love you all forever. And I'll see you next time. Bye Boo.

Kind Regards,
